KTES School Counseling Program Mission & Vision
- Vision Statement: The vision of the Kings Town Elementary School Counseling Program is that all students have the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to thrive emotionally, socially, and professionally as lifelong learners. Our students are self confident citizens who strive to create a better community through kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
- Mission Statement: The mission of the Kings Town Elementary School Counseling Program is to support the needs of the whole child to ensure the academic, social/emotional, and college/career readiness of all students. A multi-tiered system of supports and data-driven practices are utilized in planning a comprehensive, developmental school counseling program. The school counselors at Kings Town Elementary School collaborate with educational stakeholders to create a safe and inclusive environment that fosters lifelong learning. As child advocates, the school counselors put students first by promoting equity and access in all areas of school counseling programming to ensure that all students receive the necessary resources and services needed to reach their fullest potential.
- School Counselor Services
- Classroom Lessons: School counselors provide direct instruction to all students that is aligned with the SC Guidance and Counseling Model. Classroom lessons promote student learning and growth in the areas of Academic, Social/Emotional, and Career Development.
- Small Group Counseling: School counselors provide small groups to help students overcome issues impeding achievement or success. As part of the counseling program, students may be invited to participate in a small group. Students who share a common need meet together with the counselor to talk, share, and learn new skills. Group topics are offered based on needs and data. Small groups may have anywhere from 3-6 students per group and tend to run 6-8 weeks long. Small group meeting times are scheduled based on teacher recommendation to avoid students missing core instructional time. Your child may be referred to a group by a teacher, principal, or the counselor. If your child is referred a permission slip will be sent home. If you think your child would benefit from participating in a small group, please contact your child’s counselor. The counselor can help determine how to best meet the specific needs of your child. Small group topic examples include school success skills, friendship skills, emotional regulation, self esteem, grief & loss, coping skills. In addition to these topics, informal friendship building lunch bunches take place to strengthen relationships between students.
- Individual Counseling: Individual counseling is solution-focused and short-term in nature. Individual counseling addresses issues that impact school success. School counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling in schools. Common issues addressed include emotional regulation, coping skills, grief & loss, self esteem, friendship issues, and growth mindset development. School counselors also provide crisis intervention and responsive support to students in need of assistance with regulating strong emotions or challenging behaviors at school. If your child is in need of individual support to address issues that impact school success, please reach out to the school counselor for your child's grade level to discuss your concerns.
